Iconic
album covers from Hip-Hop royalty such as De La Soul, Dr. Dre,
Notorious B.I.G. (RIP), Wu-Tang Clan and 50 Cent have been given the
superhero treatment.
Hip-Hop and comics have a long history together and some of the biggest artists in the game have named themselves after comic book characters.
Method Man adopted the Johnny Blaze alias early in his Wu career and has recorded as Johnny Blaze (the name of Ghost Rider’s alter ego) several times in the years since.
Another Wu member Ghostface Killah has made reference to the superhero Iron Man and his not-so-secret identity Tony Stark throughout his career. However Ghostface, probably in an attempt to avoid a lawsuit from Marvel, spells his names differently (Ironman/Iron Man, Tony Stark/Tony Starks).
Big Pun (RIP) based his name off of Frank Castle aka The Punisher.
Speaking about the Hip-Hop tributes, Marvel’s editor-in-chief Axel Alonso, stated that there has always been an “on-going dialogue” between comics and Hip-Hop.
He added: “Beginning this October, we will shine a spotlight on the seamless relationship between those two unique forces. In total there will be 50 Marvel Hip-Hop album covers, the rest will be released in October.”
Below are some the Hip-Hop inspired comic book covers that have been revealed so far:
Iron Man/50 Cent (Get Rich or Die Tryin’)
