YouTube has decided to take a huge step towards the growing market for subscription services.
In an email sent to its partners including us, it has confirmed that it will be offering an “ads-free” service to users who subscribe to it by paying a monthly fee. Said YouTube in the email:
We’re excited to build on this momentum by taking another big step in favor of choice: offering fans an ads-free version of YouTube for a monthly fee. By creating a new paid offering, we’ll generate a new source of revenue that will supplement your fast growing advertising revenue.
The rollout is based on the success of YouTube Music Key Beta, which allows users to pay $10 a month for access to Google Play’s library and ad-free music videos on YouTube. Google says it’s already crossed 2 million installations in less than one month. There is still no word on what the tiers of subscription fee will be or when the new service option will be officially rolled out.
