It was whilst listening to the radio that i decided that this post will be about Lauryn Hill. The reason being a certain artist named Drake, don't get me wrong he is a talented guy and will feature on our site many times. The hype surrounding Drake is that he can sing & rap, but people are acting like this is a new phenomenon. Drake cannot compete with Lauryn Hill lyrically nor has he got a voice that can even compare.
Exhibit A: Doo-Wop [That Thing]
I think its safe to say that Lauryn Hill accomplished what other artists would in a career, within her solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Singles like Doo-Wop still get the club scene raving to this day, and she manged to to this without selling out. She always maintained her lyrical flow and never dumbed down her concepts for her tracks, singles or not.
Exhibit B: Ex- Factor
Although not a commercial success Ex-factor is one of her most famous and loved songs ever. It was the second single to be released from the album. Again it was a success because of the original concepts and personal related themes she wrote about. This album was released after the group in which Lauryn got famous in, The Fugees had broke up. Several of the album's songs, such as Lost Ones, Superstar, Ex-Factor and Forgive Them Father were widely speculated as direct
attacks at Fugee members Wyclef and Pras.
Exhibit C: Sweetest Thing
She explained about the
recording process of the album,''I don't know if it's a hormonal or
emotional thing I was very in touch with my feelings at the time''. Hill also went on to say "Every time I got hurt, every time I was disappointed, every time I learned, I just wrote a song''. She was a legendary and timeless artist and her skills at describing things, using similes that everyone can understand and relate to was second to none.
The Video above is taken from a performance she did aged 13. The character shown at a young age exemplifies what kind of person she is and hope she comes back to the music industry one day soon. It has been speculated that she is indeed working on her sophomore album, and she has recently performed new material which could make its way on the new LP. Also within the last 2-3 years Lauryn has been doing various performances around the USA including Rock the Bells Festival. Lets Hope she visits the U.K.
Lauryn Hill is a massive influence for many artists you listen today and has made an impact on people from Beyonce, Mary J Blige, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Adele and many more.
Amazing! Thank Yu
